Production and consumption of food accounts to 22% - 31% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. That was the bad news. The good news is that each of us can make a small difference by choosing wisely when in comes to the consumption side of the equation. The easy rule of thumb, as we have been told so many times, is to buy local and according to the season - transportation is a major source of the CO2 emissions, as is e.g. the heating of the greenhouses used in cultivation outside the season.

Exposure to Pesticides During Pregnancy Reduces IQ in Children

Recently I came across a few articles on CNN, New Scientist (ed. 30th April 2011, p. 15) and the Danish media, which announced that mother's exposure to pesticides during pregnancy have been found out to reduce child's IQ. Having recently become a mother for the second time myself, I wanted to share this information with you, who may be thinking of becoming parents.

What we eat makes a difference to our brain function

I recently got hold of a book called "The Winner's Brain - 8 Strategies Great Minds Use to Achieve Success" by Jeff Brown, Mark Fenske and Liz Neporent (Da Capo Press 2010). The book is an interesting read for anybody who wants benchmark their own traits to the traits of the successful people, and get easy and practical advice on how to "develop your own winner brain".

Bisphenol A (BPA) and why you should care

Recently while reading the New Scientist (edition 23 Oct 2010), I was reminded of a substance called bisphenol A (BPA) - and the politicians inability to move ahead with legislation that would better protect the consumers from consuming the substance with food. For those not familiar with the term, BPA is a synthetic estrogen used in the production of a hard and transparent form of polycarbonate plastic used to create food and drink containers and other consumer goods. It can also be found in metal food cans.

Cancer can to some extent be prevented by dietary choices

In high-income countries cancer is today right at the top of the list as leading cause of death together with coronary heart disease and stroke & other cerebrovascular diseases. While a hundred years ago cancer was rare, these days it is a common disease. Studying the causes of the increased cancer rates, the medical research has found out that the changes in our life style in the past 100 years, including diet, has contributed significantly to the cancer related deaths.
